If the kitchen is the soul of the house, the bedroom is the sanctuary. When you enter this room, you should be able to shed all the day’s worries and stress, and feel soothed and at peace. But this won’t happen without a bit of effort on your side.
In this piece, we’ve prepared a few tips and tricks that will help anyone turn their bedroom into a place of rest and mindfulness. Choose what works for you, and start building your safe nest, where the noise of the world can’t reach.
The human brain associates colors with feelings, which is why certain colors can be triggering while others soothe you. Now, interior designers will often make recommendations based on what’s trendy, but you already know what works for you.
If not, it’s still OK. You can find out by simply spending some time in front of a color palette.
Our recommendation is to play with different hues. Start with a base color that lowers the temperature. Colors in this category range from soft blues, muted greens, gentle lavenders, to warm grays. If you’re looking for meditative energy, go for pale sage or dusty blue as they mimic nature’s stillness.
Soften the blow of a cool color with warm neutrals (cream, sand, blush beige) in your bedding, curtains, or trim. The balance keeps the space grounded and human.
For the finish, play with matte or eggshell. These textures absorb light softly instead of bouncing it back in your face.
On average, a healthy human being spends around 26 years sleeping. That’s a lot of time, and most of it will be spent in your bed. So why not make it as comfortable as possible?
Start with the frame and mattress. The frame must be solid and simple. It shouldn’t make a sound every time you move and must support your mattress without question. The mattress is a highly personal choice, but make sure to choose a medium-firm surface that feels cozy and protects your spine’s health. Yes, it may be expensive. Yes, it is worth it.
Now, let’s move on to the bedding. Luxurious sheets, pillows, and duvets made from soft and comfortable natural fibers should be your new bedding go-to for year-round comfort. Natural fibers breathe better and regulate temperature. Plus, they make you feel like you’ve ascended to heaven every time you lie in bed.
Once this is all sorted, add a few extra notes of color and texture. A throw at the foot of the bed. A few pillows scattered through the room. A plushie you love on a chair, in the corner.
Well, not exactly light up. More of, set the right mood using light.
For the bedroom, you want warm ambient light (2700K–3000K), which tells your brain it’s time to wander into the dream world. This will be the base upon which you add two extra layers:
Adjustable lamps for reading or journaling. Choose ones with fabric or frosted shades to soften the beam.
Subtle glow from wall sconces, LED strips behind the headboard, or candles (real or faux). This gives depth and comfort without overwhelming brightness.
To take it one step further, install dimmers or use smart bulbs you can control with your phone. Gradually lowering the light before bed tells your circadian rhythm to start winding down.
You don’t have to bring plants into the bedroom if you don’t want to, but you should add some natural elements for tranquility.
Your furniture (chairs, dressers, headboards), for instance, can bring wood tones into the mix. Select pieces made from natural wood with a matte finish for a warm presence. Complete the coziness with soft area rugs that feel soft and nice to the skin when you first step out of bed.
If plants in pots are not your cup of tea, then a few fresh-cut flowers in a vase or some beautifully preserved branches are a lovely touch.
Do you love to read? Great! Add a pile of books on your nightstand or on the floor, next to the bed. A book you love can also be an amazing gift for the women in your life, so why not keep a journal close by as well? This way, you can make notes as soon as they pop up in your head.
You can also bring the people you love, in a photo frame, somewhere in the bedroom. And if you share the bedroom with a pet, bring in their bed and favorite toy. There’s no reason to fight over the blankets during the night, right?
The right colors, bedding, lighting, and textures will help you create a sleep sanctuary that’s only for you. Now, all you have to do is lie your head on the pillow, close your eyes, and slowly drift away into the world of imagination and rest. Sweet dreams!
